Remembering Carol Fletcher

Our Carol

Carol Martin Fletcher

1944-2022

Farmcolony mourns the loss of Carol Fletcher who went to her eternal rest at her home on July 7, 2022 surrounded by family.  We join Russ, Theresa, Matt and Lydia in mourning her passing and will continue to keep the family in our thoughts and prayers.  Carol’s presence on the farm will be sorely missed.

Carol taught elementary school for 33 years in Virginia Beach where she touched the lives of students and colleagues. After retiring, she and Russ moved  to Farmcolony to be closer to their daughter where they made many new friends, created beautiful gardens and spent many precious years caring for their grandchild, Lydia. Carol loved traveling, gardening, and entertaining. Her Halloween parties were epic!

On August 20, friends and family gathered for a celebration of Carol’s life.  Carol, or Mimi as she was christened by Lydia, left us way too early, but she left us with many wonderful memories.

Contributions in Carol’s memory can be made to Feeding Greene Inc. – The Food Pantry of Greene County, P.O. Box 13, Stanardsville, VA 22973.

Two things stand out to me about Carol, how much fun she was at our spa days and her Halloween parties. Her Halloween parties were epic!

I first knew Carol as a master gardener, with figs, vegetables, and flowers in abundance around her home. For spa days and other gatherings, she was a gracious host, helping us feel welcome and even pampered.

One memory I’d like to share was how kind Carol was to Warren. She would drive him to chair yoga and back to the farm during his declining years.  That was a very special treat for him.  I will miss her and her special, loving nature very much.

She was a devoted grandmother, and still in my mind I see Lydia driving their Husqvarna utility vehicle under Carol’s guidance. I think the thing that impressed me most, however, were Carol’s earthworms. She engaged in vermiculture, raising earthworms to process food and paper waste into rich nutrients for her garden plants. In all of these varied areas, she was an accomplished expert at taking life to the next level.

Carol was such a gracious hostess. We always looked forward particularly to Carol’s house for Spa Day, where there would be such a plenteous display of all kinds of delicious food, especially oysters done several different ways.

I remember one year when I was Farmhouse Manager, Carol helped me during Spring break— she had one room & cleaned it well! She helped me mop the floor in the great room!  I will miss her!

Her annual Halloween party was the grand finale of Farmcolony’s truck-or-treating, and the house displayed a wide variety of delightful decorations that complemented the guests’ costumes. Her wry wit, sense of humor, and wisdom peppered and enlivened conversations.

Carol was one person who organized & hosted Spa Days.  I almost forgot—she had a worm farm — I ordered for my son!
